Parkland Burn Formula
In clinical review, locked
The NurseTools Parkland tool is planned to show the burn resuscitation fluid arithmetic for the first 24 hours. It is in clinical review, locked, and not available yet.
The formula
Total fluid (mL) = 4 mL × weight (kg) × %TBSA burned, over 24 hours. Half in the first 8 hours from the time of the burn, half over the next 16.
What the tool will cover
- Planned: 24-hour total and the 8-hour and 16-hour split.
- Planned: a reminder that the clock starts at the time of the burn.
- Planned: sources, version and review date on the tool.
Status
This tool is in clinical review and locked. It is not available in NurseTools yet, and nothing unlocks it early. It is released only after it clears all four gates:
- Source and rights audit. Every formula and reference is traced to its source and licensed for use.
- Clinical editorial review. A reviewer with the right specialty signs off on the content.
- Independent testing. Known-answer tests cover normal values, edge cases and unit mix-ups.
- Regulatory and App Store review. Higher-risk tools wait for the right approval route before release.

Questions
Can I use the Parkland tool in NurseTools now?
No. The Parkland tool is in clinical review and locked. It becomes available only after it passes source review, clinical editorial review, independent testing and App Store review. Nothing unlocks it early.
Is the Parkland result the final fluid plan?
No. It is a starting estimate. Burn teams adjust fluids to the patient response, such as urine output.
Which burns count toward %TBSA?
Partial-thickness and full-thickness burns. Superficial burns are not counted.
